Filter Cotton

Special filter cotton for primary filters

Filter cotton is an exceptional and almost essential media for primary mechanical filtration. Its low cost and high effectiveness make it unbeatable for keeping your water clear and protecting the rest of your filter. Just remember its disposable nature and replace it regularly for optimal performance.

Mainly used in primary air filtration

Filter cotton is a non-woven, synthetic polyester material that resembles a dense, fluffy cotton ball. It's inexpensive, highly porous, and designed to be a disposable mechanical filtration media.

Its primary job in any filtration system is mechanical filtration—the physical removal of solid particles and debris from the water or air.

Primary Use: Mechanical Filtration

In a filter, water flows in a specific sequence. The primary stage is the first point of contact for dirty water. Filter cotton is ideally suited for this role because it traps debris before it can reach and clog the more expensive and delicate biological and chemical media downstream.

What it traps:

  • Fish waste (poop)

  • Uneaten food

  • Plant debris and detritus

  • Dust particles from other media

  • General suspended gunk that clouds the water

Key Applications

1. Aquarium Filtration (Most Common Use)

This is where filter cotton is a staple. It's used in all types of aquarium filters:

  • Canister Filters: Placed in the first tray(s) after the water inlet.

  • Hang-on-Back (HOB) Filters: Placed first in the filter box, right where the water enters.

  • Sump Filters: Often used in the first compartment (the "sump sock" compartment) or in a dedicated filter sock, which is essentially a sleeve made of the same material.

  • Internal & Sponge Filters: Sometimes wrapped around a sponge filter to provide extra polishing.

2. HVAC & Air Handlers

In furnaces and air conditioning systems, a primary filter made of a similar polyester material is the first line of defense. It traps:

  • Dust

  • Lint

  • Pet hair

  • Pollen
This protects the delicate coils and blower motor from getting clogged.

3. Pond Filtration

Used in pressurized pond filters or as a pre-filter material in large pond sieve systems to remove large debris.

  • Excellent Mechanical Filtration: It's incredibly effective at polishing water and making it crystal clear by trapping fine particles.

  • Inexpensive: It is one of the cheapest types of filter media available.

  • Highly Permeable: Water flows through it very easily, preventing flow restriction (until it becomes clogged).

  • Customizable: You can tear and shape it to fit any filter compartment perfectly.

  • Protects Biological Media: By trapping debris first, it prevents your valuable ceramic rings, bio-balls, or sponge media from getting clogged. This ensures a larger, cleaner surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize.
